Preparing photographs for the web

Choosing image crops and sizes is part of preparing a quality publication.

Preparing photos for the web starts by choosing a frame that carries information, not decoration alone. Every image should have a role in the page story. Before upload, reduce dimensions and file weight without visible quality loss. Oversized images slow mobile views. Keep consistent ratios inside the same module.

Mixed formats often break layout rhythm. Add a meaningful filename and alternative text before publish. Generic names make later media management harder. Check focus and cropping on mobile: the important part of the frame must not disappear. In image series, keep similar exposure and style so the gallery feels coherent.

Avoid text baked into photos when that text must stay readable and translatable. Finally, compare the page with and without the image: if nothing is clear without it, the description and caption must be stronger. Prefer modern formats with fallback where needed, and avoid unnecessary filters that add weight. For hero images, prepare a mobile crop in advance instead of relying only on automatic cropping. Verify rights and credits before publish, especially with stock photography.
